From the Ashes the Phoenix Arises

The students who graduate from the Harrow Course at the University of Westminster in 2008 are particularly special, for it is they who witnessed the ashes which were the remains of our much-loved ceramics buildings, and it is they who lost much of their own work and possessions in the devastation caused by the fire in the summer of 2007. They are also unforgettable as being instrumental in bringing our department back to life, making the sparkling new facilities their home and battling with unfamiliar surroundings to produce this fantastic degree show.

The range of work is characteristically diverse, ranging from intimate,
detailed ceramic pieces to richly glazed bowls and intriguing
installations.

To those who knew nothing of the events of last June, it is a perfectly
normal exhibition, which does in fact make it an extraordinary feat.

At the start of the year students decided to give their show a title: this showed great faith in their abilities not only to survive but to shine, and so it is with pride that we wish all our final year students the greatest success and congratulate them for their remarkable achievements as the ‘Phoenix’ has indeed arisen from the ashes.
